Faro is the capital of the Algarve Region. If you enter faro by road from the North, you arrive at a high plateau along a dersert like landscape before dropping quickly towards the sea level.
Faro, is a hub of the algarve region at the Ocean and most of the population of this regin is Ocean front. If you are flying, Faro is the point of entry to the Algarve region.
There are many sites within the city that include: the Cathedral (Roman-Gothic origin), Nossa Senhora da Assuncão Convent (Renaissance), São Francisco Church (16-18th centuries) and museums such as Infante Dom Henrique, Regional Ethnographic, Ramalho Ortigão.
If you go to the waterfront in faro, there is not much of a beach. This is because, this part of the Atlantic coast line is surrounded by strong ecosystems - the green stuff!
This coast line has its advantages for point of interest. Some of these interests include marine life tours by boat. There are a few tour operators out of Faro that are experts on this amazing ecosystem as well as the history of the people. More, by getting out there by boat, you can make way to some incredible scenery - a look up and down the Atlantic and towards the Mediterranean passsage (where the ocean and sea meet, a view of grottoes (cave like caverns) plus many more water activities.
To the West of Faro, you will be surprised at what is around the corner. In communities from the from Portimao to Lagos... Where Faro gives off a feel of older and historic, the west gives off the feel of new. To the west, you will find many new deveopments and growing attractions such as the Algarve Motor park.
Faro is worth checking out and a great place to organize your visit to the Algarve region.
