As in most Mediterranean countries Portuguese drink coffee in between meals. In Lisbon there are hundreds of small cafes and cafeterias or pastelarias. Here you can have breakfast or lunch with your coffee, but don’t expect to much from it. Portuguese love to have a small piece of pastry with their coffee. Especially bolus de nate, a cream pastry, is very popular
The Portuguese are very particular about their coffee and always demand the best. It is served in various ways and given different names. If you want a French coffee with a lot of milk, order a “galão”, if you want less milk, that’s a "cafe com leite". If you like espresso you’ll love a “bica”, which is the Portuguese variant on the small cup of strong coffee theme. Tea in Portugal served rather weak to the English taste, and without milk.
